A School Girl's Guide to Symbiosis

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

Symbiotic relationships are an important component of life on earth. They are a major driving force of evolution. This networking and cooperation among species allow them to survive better than they would as individuals. In such relationships, plants or animals of different species may be dependent on one another for survival. They may share habitats or lifestyles or interact in a specific way to benefit from the presence of another organism. Different species often inhabit the same spaces and share or compete for the same resources, they interact in a variety of ways, known collectively as symbiosis. There are five main symbiotic relationships, mutualism, commensalism, predation, parasitism, and competition. Mutualism both partner’s benefit. An example of mutualism is the relationship between the Egyptian plover and the crocodile. Commensalism is a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits while the other species are not affected. One species typically uses the other for a purpose other than food. For example, mites attach themselves to larger flying insects to get a “free ride.” Hermit crabs use the shells of dead snails for homes. Predation is a symbiotic relationship in which one species survives on costuming the other species. The species that consume or win is the predator and the species that is eaten up is the prey, for example, a lion will hunt for an antelope or another animal and eat them. parasitism is when one organism benefits from the relationship but at the expense of the other. The organism may live inside the other's body or on its surface. For example, fleas and mosquitoes feed on blood from other organisms. Competition is a relationship between organisms that compete or strive for the same resources in the same place and at the same time. One example of a competition relationship is the fight for sunlight and water in a location with a dense tree or plant population. That's all I really have to say about this topic, I hope you enjoyed
