A School Girl’s Guide to Names

A name is a word or set of words by which a person or thing is known, addressed, or referred to. A lot of people don't think about their names and how important it is, so today I'm here to talk about names. The study of names is called onomastics, a field that touches on linguistics, history, anthropology, psychology, sociology, philology, and much more. When people refer to the "meaning of a name", they are most likely referring to the etymology, which is the original literal meaning. The oldest writing dates to about 1450 BC. Some Knossos Linear B tablets mention people by name. A number of Mycenaean names have exact equivalents in Homer such as Hektor, which means “holding fast.” Following many other ancient naming traditions, even ancient Greek names have an intrinsic meaning. Taxonomy. The binomial name Homo sapiens was coined by Carl Linnaeus (1758). Names for other human species were introduced beginning in the second half of the 19th century (Homo neanderthalensis 1864, Homo erectus 1892). Did you know that the reason names have meanings is that it was traditionally common to name people after certain concepts, to bless them, to indicate something about them, to let them appear smarter, and so on and so forth? That was probably the original meaning. Did you know that while there is some debate on who is the oldest named person on record, for the most part, many researchers agree that Kushim is the oldest known name in the world, dating back to around 3400 to 3000 BCE? Surprisingly, Kushim wasn't a king or ruler, they were an account. Did you know that The oldest surname in the world is KATZ (the initials of the two words – Kohen Tsedek). Every Katz is a priest, descending in an unbroken line from Aaron the brother of Moses, 1300 B.C. That all I really have to say about names, I hope you enjoyed it.

Sincerely,
