A School Girl's Guide to Insomnia

If you didn't know, I have really bad insomnia to the point where I'm talking to a psychologist about it, and since I'm working to sleep at night maybe I could find out more about insomnia. Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, is a sleep disorder in which people have trouble sleeping. They may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep as long as desired. Insomnia is typically followed by daytime sleepiness, low energy, irritability, and a depressed mood. Common causes of insomnia include stress, an irregular sleep schedule, poor sleeping habits, mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, physical illnesses and pain, medications, neurological problems, and specific sleep disorders. Three types of insomnia are acute, transient, and chronic insomnia. Insomnia is defined as repeated difficulty with sleep initiation, maintenance, consolidation, or quality that occurs despite adequate time and opportunity for sleep and results in some form of daytime impairment. There are three types of insomnia, acute insomnia, transient insomnia, and chronic insomnia. This article https://www.medicinenet.com/what_are_the_three_types_of_insomnia/article.htm. The first records of insomnia come from the 1600s. It comes from the Latin insom(nis), meaning “without sleep.” This is formed from the prefix in–, in this case meaning “not,” the root somn(us), meaning “sleep,” and the ending -ia, which is used in the names of diseases. The "insomnia gene" was discovered by a team headed by Professor Özçelik after almost eight years of research. Their study showed that mutations in Cryptochrome 1 (CRY1), one of the genes controlling the biological clock, could cause deteriorations in biological rhythm and the sleep cycle. About one in seven adults has chronic (long-term) insomnia. Chronic insomnia can affect your ability to do daily tasks like working, going to school, or caring for yourself. Insomnia is more common in women, especially older women, than in men. I don't have much else to add about insomnia, I hope you enjoyed it!

Sincerely,
