A School Girl's Guide To Greek Mythology

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

Greek myth takes many forms, from religious myths of origin to folktales and legends of heroes. In terms of gods, the Greek pantheon consists of 12 deities who were said to reside at Mount Olympus, Greek mythology is the set of myths and legends belonging to the culture of Ancient Greece, dealing with its gods and heroes, the nature of the world, the origins and the meaning of its own cults and ritual practices. Zeus the Leader of the Olympians, and god of the sky and lightning. Hera the Queen of the gods and married to Zeus. Poseidon the God of the ocean, earthquakes, and horses. Dionysus the Lord of wine and celebrations. Apollo the Greek god of archery, music, light, and prophecy. Artemis the Goddess of the hunt, archery, and animals. The Greek stories of gods, heroes, and monsters are told and retold around the world even today. The earliest known versions of these myths date back more than 2,700 years, appearing in written form in the works of the Greek poet's Homer and Hesiod. But some of these myths are much older. Greek mythology is believed to have stemmed from centuries of oral tradition. It is likely that Greek myths evolved from stories told in the Minoan civilization of Crete, which flourished from about 3000 to 1100 BCE. Myths are stories created to teach people about something important and meaningful. The Ancient Greeks believed that they had to pray to the gods for help and protection, because if the gods were unhappy with someone, then they would punish them. I'm learning about Greek mythology myself so I decided to write about it on my blog did you know that Zeus would help the other gods, goddesses, and mortals if they needed help, but would also invoke his wrath upon them if he felt they weren't worthy of his help. This made Zeus the strongest Greek god in Greek mythology also, did you know that Eros is the weakest figure in ancient Greek mythology. He's a boy with a bow and arrow, and not a great aim. Ancient myths express profound truths, though, so Cupid is also the strongest. According to Pindar, “Even the gods abhor his power." The purpose of a myth was to provide the hearer with a truth which the audience then interpreted for themselves within the value system of their culture. Mythology tries to answer the most difficult and the most basic questions of human existence. I hope you enjoyed this, I worked pretty hard on it.

Sincerely,
